Abstract
The Urartians ruled over the regions around Lake Van and Lake Sevan and Lake Urmia and Lake Childir from about ninth to seventh centuries BC. During the reign of the Urartians the weather became drier and more dehydrated in eastern Anatolia and east of Lake Van and it became more similar to the current climate situation in the region. Therefore, The Urartians’ hydraulic and genius solution was to construct several artificial lakes or reservoirs, water canals, fountains and dams which some of them are recognized by the inscriptions or archaeological surveys and a number of them are still used and active. It seems that qanats were not built by the Urartians but they may have used the qanats built by the other people before them in the region. They also built vineyards, gardens, silos and warehouses that are result of the agricultural improvement in the region and the importance of it for the Urartian kings. The hydraulic constructions are less built in other regions under the Urartians' control as North West of Iran and in Armenia. Ancient climate studies also illustrate that the eastern Anatolia was drier in that era. Additionally, the population raised in the Urartian lands and the kings moved the people of the newly defeated areas and these could be the reason for the hydraulic constructions by the Urartians. It is the aim of the authors in this study to mention climate condition in the reign of the Urartians in their lands and to study their solutions to fight drought by constructing different hydraulic constructions and to improve the agriculture and the watering system in the area.
